The third largest land predator after the bear and the tiger weights up to 280kg. Males reach a height of 120 cm, females 100 cm.
Lions differ in colour from light buff to yellowish, sometimes reddish to dark ochraceous brown.
The tail is 70-100 cm long and ends in a dark tuft. Only the male sports the distinct mane.
